The prince of Morocco arrives in Belmont to win Portia’s hand in marriage.
Explanation:
- Portia is asked by the prince to not judge him for his dark complexion and the prince assures her that he is as valorous and courageous as any European man.
- Portia says to the prince that her own tastes will not be considered as the process of picking chests which her father stipulated in his will.
- She also says that the prince is as worthy as any other suitor. After a long proclamation of his bravery, valour and heroism, the prince urges Portia to take him to the caskets so that he can venture his guess.
- Portia reminds him about the penalty for incorrect guessing which is that he must remain unmarried forever. The stipulation is accepted by the prince and Portia leads him off to dinner.
