THE SUMMARY
This chapter describes the funeral procession of the Canterville ghost. A deep grave had been dug in the corner of the churchyard, under the old yew tree.
When the ceremony was over, the servants put out their torches and the coffin was lowered into the grave. Virginia laid on it a large cross made of white and pink almond blossoms. As she did so, the moon shone from behind a cloud.
The next morning, before Lord Canterville went up to town, Mr. Otis talked to him on the subject of the jewels which the ghost had given to Virginia. He did not think it morally correct on her part to accept the gift. But Lord Canterville insisted on giving the jewels to Virginia. He believed that if these were taken from her, the old fellow would be out of his grave and lead him the devil of a life. Mr. Otis was much distressed at the refusal to take the jewels.
Virginia was then married to her fiance, the young Duke. After their honeymoon the royal couple went over to the grave of the Canterville ghost. The Duchess showered upon the grave of the ghost and prayed for him.
