The little girl is a story written by Katherine Mansfield. This story is a about a little girl named Kezia who has a great fear of her father. Before going to office, his father used to come in her room to give her a casual kiss and then he would leave for his office. As in when he used to leave, Kezia would get a feeling of relief. Her Grandmother wanted her to know her father better, so she used to send Kezia every Sunday afternoon, to spend some lovely time with her parents.

One day, her Grandmother asked her to make a beautiful pin- cusion for her father as his birthday was approaching. She made it with a lot of effort. But, she stuffed it with the papers lying on the table, without realising that those papers were of her father's great speech for Port Authority. Her father hit her soft pink palms with a ruler to teach her a lesson.

In the story, she compares her father with her neighbour Mr. Macdonald, who used to play with his children rather than scolding them, as Kezia's father used to.

A day came, when Kezia's mother fell ill and had to be taken to hospital. Grandmother also accompanied her. Only Kezia and her cook Alice were at home. Everything was fine in the daytime. But at night Kezia got the same nightmare of the Butcher and the knife and she started screaming " Grandmother, Grandmother". But what she found was her father standing beside her bed. He took him to his room, and tucked her in her arms and she felt comfortable. Finally, at last she realises that her father was too busy to become Mr. Macdonald..and he used to scold her as she cared for her.

Hope you understood!
