In the year 1953, Chuck Hooper had everything going on for him. He was a strong, well-built young man bubbling with energy. He worked for a chemical company as a Zonal Sales Manager. He was living a happy life with his wife Marcy and a four year old Doberman called Duke. One autumn evening while driving home he met with a car accident. He was partly paralyzed due to a brain injury. He was depressed and bed –ridden in the hospital. Chuck’s wife who did like not Doberman moved their dog Duke to a kennel.
After a long stay in the hospital Chuck returned home. He was unable to stand as he was partly paralyzed. He felt very lonely at home. So, Marcy brought back Duke from the kennel. Right from the first day Duke understood his master’s difficulty and never left him alone. Duke always tried to comfort his master.
The two, Hooper and Duke used to stare each other throughout the day. Chuck Hooper was lost in thoughts. Duke could not bear chuck's misery and started poking and prodding his master with an intention to make his master respond. Duke guided his master to get up from the wheel chair and literally pushed him to walk. Initially, Chuck walked very slowly holding on the dog’s leash. Gradually, chuck started walking by himself. The progress was slow and he was able to walk around neighborhood. Now, neighbors on the street were watching the pattern of chuck’s progress.
Then one day, Chuck and Duke walked up to an intersection quite far away. Chuck also walked into the local branch office of the company. This surprised all the staff. He started working for a few hours at first. Later, he achieved his objective to work full time in his office. All the time chuck was guided by his faithful dog Duke. Now, chuck had no time for physiotherapy and depended completely on Duke.
One evening Duke was hit by a car and driven to animal hospital by Marcy. He suffered serious injuries. In the hospital he was given good treatment but he could not survive. A week ago, Chuck was promoted to Assistant National Sales’ Manager. It was the real tribute to Duke from the headquarters of chemical company.
