Raising Scorpions” is a story written by Gerald Durrell. It’s about the author’s fascination for scorpions living in wall cracks of his house and how his fondness for them led to unexpected chaos. In the story, it is told that scorpions are very shy yet very dangerous creatures. The narrator grew fond of these creatures and used to observe them very closely. One day he noticed a fat female scorpion wearing a fur coat on closer examination he came to know that the garment was made up of mass of babies clinging to their mother.

He didn’t want to miss the chance to see the babies grow so he captured the scorpion with great skill. On returning to his villa he came to know that unfortunately lunch was being served and so he placed the matchbox on the mantelpiece and joined his family for lunch. While eating food he completely forgot about his new captures. When his brother Larry finishes his food he idly opens the matchbox and when an angry female scorpion crawled out on his hand he uttered a roar of fright and threw it on the table between Margo and Leslie which made Lugretzia fall a plate and brought Roger down from the table.

Leslie flicked it towards Margo with a napkin and she screamed loudly. Margo tried to splash water on the scorpion but drenched their mother instead. Roger bit Lugretzia’s ankle thinking she was responsible.

Leslie suggested killing the scorpions but Gerald placed all the baby scorpions back on their mother’s back and released them on the garden wall with his mother’s permission.
