Mahatma Gandhi started the Satyagraha movement to liberate the country from the British. This movement awakened the spirit of freedom among the people. Lakhs of people came forward from all over the country who were ready to lay down their lives in this great struggle. Independence Day was celebrated for the first time in slave India on 26 January 1930. This cycle continued even further. Two and a half years after independence, in 1950, this day also became the day for the implementation of our own republic.
Sitaram Seksaria, the author of the present text, was one of those infinite people who wished for freedom. Whatever he saw, heard and felt from day to day, he recorded it in his personal diary. This sequence went on for many years. In this text there is an account of his diary dated 26 January 1931. With what enthusiasm the people of Calcutta (Kolkata) including Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the author himself celebrated the country's second Independence Day, how the British administrators considered it their crime and how they inflicted atrocities on them and especially on women activists described in the text. 26 January: Today is an immortal day. Independence Day was celebrated all over India on this day. And this year also there was its repetition for which a lot of preparations had been done in advance. Last year its share was very simple. This year I gave as much as I could. Two thousand rupees were spent only in the campaign. They used to consider the burden of all the work on themselves, and in the same way, they went to the houses of the workers and explained them.
The national flag was often hoisted on the houses of the big market, and many houses were decorated in such a way that it appeared as if independence had been achieved. Flags were put up in every part of Calcutta. The way in which human beings used to go, there seemed to be enthusiasm and innovation in the same way.People said that such decoration was not done before. The police were also protesting by patrolling the city with all their might. Gorkhas and sergeants were stationed at every turn in motor lorries. How many lorries were being driven in the city. Horsemen were arranged. There was no traffic police anywhere, all the police were deployed in this work. Large parks and grounds were surrounded by the police since morning.
The place under the monument, where the meeting was to be held in the evening, was surrounded by the police in large numbers from 6 o'clock in the morning, but even then in many places the flag was hoisted in the morning itself. When Bengal Provincial Students Union Minister Avinash Babu raised the flag in Shraddhanand Park, the police caught him and killed or removed more people.In Tara Sundari Park, Bada-Bazar Congress Committee's War Minister Harishchandra Singh went to hoist the flag but he could not go inside. There was a lot of fighting and the heads of two or four men were torn off. There was a procession on behalf of the Gujarati Sevika Sangh, in which many girls were arrested.
