Gaining Victory, written by poet Sue Faulkner, is a poem about how it is important that one never forget that they are in control of their own life. Although little is known about the life of the poet, the beautifully written poem takes us through the hopes, despairs and eventual realisations of the poet.

It starts of with her despairing and comparing herself. She feels she is always at the receiving end of a bad bargain and compares life to a bed of thorns. With such morbid thoughts, she is barely able to function. However, when she realises that she has only imprisoned herself with her own thoughts, she makes a conscious effort to turn it around.
