Putra Prem is a story revolving around Chaitanya das and his two sons Prabhudas and Shivdas. Chaitanya das is a landlord and he has two to three villages under him. He had earned a lot of money and due to his calculative nature, had a good bank balance. He wanted his elder son to become a barrister, but Prabhudas took ill and after months of treatment there was no improvement. He suffered from tuberculosis and doctor advised him to send him in a sanatorium in Italy. Chaitanya das was worried about the expenses which the doctor said would be rupees three thousand and that there was no guarantee of the cure. He didn't want to spend money where the result was not sure and even his wife's pleading and crying made no difference in his decision.
He gets to learn about a young man who had brought many of his relatives for the funeral ceremony of his father despite his humble background. The young man talked about his father's dream to get cremated at Manikarnika Ghat and he felt it was his duty to fulfil that. Money had no importance over his father's wish. Chaitanya das felt guilty and when Prabhudas died he spent a huge sum of money as that was the only way he could get rid of his regret.
