Enclosures put-up by the rich land owners resulted in the disappearance of the common land, hitherto used by the poor, for survival. During the French war, prices of food grains were high and farmers expanded production vigorously. To reduce the dependence on the labourers, they introduced the Threshing machine.

The peasants and farmers cultivated these open fields which were strips of land near the village. ... Farmers started to trespass in the common land to improve the sheep breed as it promised good feed. These acts were known as enclosures. They did not let the poor who were dependant on that land to access it.
