The poem Refugee Blues by W H Auden presents provides an insight into the plight of Jewish refugees during the regime of the Nazis. The poet represents himself as a refugee in a foreign land with a companion. The land that the poet was in was inhabited by ten million people. While some were rich and lived in palatial mansions, there were also those who lived in extreme poverty. Unfortunately, the poet and his friend did not get accommodation in either place. They belonged to a wonderful land but could not go there because they had not renewed their passports.
When the council asked the pair for their passports, they replied that the passports had expired. The council mocked and shouted at them that with expired passports they were as good as dead. However, when they approached a committee to renew the passports, they were asked to come the following year. Later, the poet went to a public meeting where he heard the open protests of the citizens of the land for allowing refugees like him into the country. The meeting was held by Hitler demanding the execution of all Jews.
