Santosh Yadav

Santosh Yadav was born in the small village of Joniya of Rewari District in Haryana. She was from a pretty affluent family. She was the 6th child, a sister to 5 elder brothers.

As her parents were quite wealthy, they could afford the fees of the best schools in Delhi but just for the sake of the prevailing customs they sent her to the village school. Since childhood she was quite different from the rest of the girls in the village, preferred wearing shorts than traditional Indian dresses.

Again because of customs she was forced to marry at the age of sixteen but she opposed and said she wants to be well educated first. But as her parents refused her proposal she left home and decided to work part-time to pay her own school fees. But eventually her parents accepted her urge for more education and agreed to support her.

After high school, Santosh joined the Maharani college at Jaipur and lived at the Kasturba hostel. There she saw villagers climbing the Aravalli hills and vanishing after sometime. She became very anxious to know what was on the other side of the hill.

So she saved money and enrolled in a course at Uttarkashi’s Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. After 4 years of training in the year 1992 at the age of 20 she became the youngest woman to climb Mount Everest. In the same mission she saved another climber, Mohan Singh, by sharing her Oxygen with him. Within twelve months she joined the Nepalese Women’s Expedition. After that she climbed Mount Everest again and became the world's only woman to have achieved the feat twice. The Indian government granted her the Padma Shri for her achievements.

Santosh couldn't describe how proud she was when she was on the rop of the world hoisting the Indian Flag.

Being an environmentalist, she brought down 500 Kgs. of garbage from the Himalayas.
