Summary of- The School for Elephants

If you ever visited a zoo or a national park, you must have seen elephants. Mostly, these elephants are tamed. These are working elephants that have large wooden seats or platforms tied to their backs, on which tourists can sit and enjoy a ride.

These tourists are common in tourist spots but many dont realize that these gentle giants were originally wild animals that were trained to work for humans.

In Thailand, the elephants are left alone in little one-room stalls. The older female elephant is used to train the young elephants, which are about five years old. Initially, the young elephant struggles to get out but then the teenagers gathered and offer bananas and sweet sugarcane to the young elephants to eat.

Eventually, the young elephants calm down and after having many bananas, they decide to accept their situation. In this elephant school, the 30-year-old elephant is the trainer. Elephant riders or mahouts help the little elephants to get trained.

After a great deal of cajoling, the elephant learns to let the mahout sit on his head and listen to his commands such as Sit down, stand up and stop. This way elephants get trained in their school.
