The novel is set during the First World War in England in Styles court, a lavish manner in Essex country. After the death of her husband Mr. Cavendish, Mrs. Emily Cavendish inherits all his life estates and his income. However, she marries a young man named Alfred Inglethorp.
She also has two stepsons; Lawrence and John Cavendish and his wife Mary. The property is to pass to John after the demise of his stepmother according to his father’s will and Mrs. Inglethorp would be distributed to her step-sons as per her will.
One night, Mrs. Inglethorp is found dead because of poisoning and an investigation is commenced by Lieutenant Hastings and his friend Poirot who are house guests. On the day of the incident, she was heard arguing with someone, either her step-son John or her husband Alfred.
Alfred is taken as the prime subject as he has the most to gain from this. Later, the police also arrest John Cavendish. However, it is later proved by Poirot that Alfred was the one who committed the crime and releases John.
Alfred along with Emily’s companion Evelyn Howard planned it all and killed her. Their strategy was that Alfred would be proved guilty with false evidence that could be refuted at the trial and he could not be tried for a second time due to double jeopardy.
The Mysterious Affair at Styles, which is Agatha Christie’s first novel, was the result of a dare from her sister Madge who forced her to write a story.
