Answer:

The Kabuliwallah is the story of an uncommon friendship between a five-year-old girl and a merchant belonging to Kabul.

The story is narrated by the father of Mini, the little girl.

Mini is a very loquacious girl. In the beginning of the story, she is seen talking to her father and asking him questions. She asks a question and without waiting for an answer, asks him another, totally unrelated question. Since the father's room window overlooked the road, passers-by could be seen. Mini saw a Kabuliwallah and exclaimed so. The Kabuliwallah heard this and came inside.

Mini had a notion that the merchant carried children in his bag. So she ran away. Since he had been called inside the house, the father decides to buy some small stuff. As he gets paid and starts to leave, the Kabuliwallah stops to ask for the girl. Her father summons her. She is offered nuts but she does not take them.

A few days later, the father is surprised to see the Kabuliwallah talking to Mini. They would talk over all sorts of things, and they had their own little jokes, one of which was the one about the father-in-law. The merchant would ask Mini if she was going to her father-in-law's house, she did not know the meaning of father-in-law. Nevertheless, she used to ask him the same question back. The people of the Kabuliwallah's class considered 'father-in-law's house' to be a euphemism for jail. The Kabuliwallah used to reply by saying that he would beat the father-in-law (the jailor) and the both would laugh. Mini's mother was very worried that the Kabuliwallah would kidnap Mini or harm her, but her father brushed them off.

There was a period of time when the merchant used to go around collecting debts before leaving for his home. On one such round he got into a brawl with someone who owed him, and struck him with a knife. Due to this, he was arrested and sent to jail.

Eight years passed and it was the day of Mini's wedding. His father sat in his room poring over accounts and trying not to think of his daughter leaving, when the Kabuliwallah entered the room. The father did not recognise him at first, but understood who he was when he smiled. When the merchant said that he was released from jail the previous night, he got worried that a criminal coming to his house would be a bad omen on this auspicious day.

He told him that there was a ceremony, and he should come back some other day. He was about to leave when he stopped and requested to see the 'little one'. He thought she would be the same age and they could crack jokes like before. He had even brought some nuts for her. The father told him he would not be able to see anyone. He was sad and going to leave but came back to give the nuts to the father, asking him to give them to Mini. He told the father that he need not give him money as he has a daughter just like Mini, and it is in her memory he gives Mini nuts. he showed him his daughter's handprint.

The father decided to call Mini to meet the Kabuliwallah. Some objections were raised at this, but the father was insistent. When Rahmun saw Mini dressed up in a red sari with sandal paste on her forehead, he was amazed at the change and could not say anything, after a while he managed to ask her if she was going to her father-in-law's house. Now that Mini knew the meaning, she could not respond.

Rahmun realised his own daughter must also have grown up, and he would not be able to talk to her as he once did. Mini's father gave him some money and told him to go back to his daughter.

Due to this, Mini's father had to cut down on some decorations, but he was satisfied that somewhere a father would meet his long-lost child.

Hope this helps.
