He developed a close relationship with an orphan girl. He started to teach her to read. But, soon he fell ill and decided to quit the job. He returned to Calcutta. The orphan girl asked him to take her with him. But the postmaster refused callously to the request. He tried to offer her his remaining salary but the girl refused  

The girl was heartbroken and was having a vague hope that the postmaster will return for her.  But the hope of the girl, Ratan was never fulfilled.
