They Fought Like Tigers written by Subhadra Sen Gupta is historical fictional short story from her series of story titled A Bagful History. The story is about three children -Ira, Arjun and Shahi who visit the historical site British Residency in Lucknow and experience an eerie enocunter with the ghost of Henry Montogomery Lawerence, a British military officer, administrator and statesman in British India, and who died at the Siege of Lucknow during the 1857 Indian Mutiny Rebellion.
Explanation:
- The story started with Ira, Arjun, and Shahid visiting the historical site British Residency, Lucknow where they learn about the 1857 Indian Mutiny Rebellion or the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny.
- They meet a white-haired old man who was seated on a truly antique and very tatty looking sofa and he looked like he was a reflection in water. Initially they were afraid, however when the old man began narrating the about the 1857 Indian Mutiny they started ti keenly listen to them. Later the children also got to know that the man they were speaking to was an English man
- The old man narrated how the Rebel Sepoys of the mutiny had fought bravely and had fought like tigers in fact, even though they did not have enough ammunition or good officers. Though the rebel sepoys lost, they had the British a tough battle
- The old man also told them about how during the mutiny even certain section of the Indian soldiers such as the Sikhs, Gurkhas, and Pathans had fought against the rebel Sepoys, as they were loyal to the East India Company and were protecting the British Residency.
- After listening to the old man's story Ira extended her hand to shake hands with the old man, but she when touching him she felt like it was a fleeting touch of a feather brushing across her palm.
- After a series of confusion, the children realise the person whom they were speaking to was none other than Henry Lawrence a British military officer, administrator and statesman in British India, and who died at the Siege of Lucknow during the 1857 Indian Mutiny Rebellion and whose grave was in the British Residency with the words written "Here lies, Henry Lawrence, Who tried to do his duty".
