in this poem, the poet is symbolizing himself as the caged bird.
in this poem the bird is being caged and is deprived of its freedom. In the poets life he couldn't get a good job because of his colour and he was being discriminated by the others.
So in this poem he is explaining that he feels how the caged bird feels, because it cant be with its other pack of birds and it doesn't have freedom like the poet.
