Answer:

William Morris is the narrator . He is highly observant and uses common sense to the fullest . He had a hobby of reading crime fiction . He was an assistant jeweller in a highly reputed shop Regnier's . Regnier's was famous for antique jewellery .

On one morning , Morris was arranging the jewellry on the display when he saw that a young woman was standing out of the Undertaker's shop and was staring at the urns and the photographs of the grave stones as if someone she loved had passed away .

After 15 - 20 minutes a man came into the shop . Morris came to know that the man was an American due to his accent and dressing sense . He was chewing a gum too. He did not have any sense of jewellery .

He asks Morris to show him some rings . Morris places the tray of rings in front of him . He asks him which was the most expensive and tells him show him the ring which were placed in the safe behind . Morris turns back and comes to know that the ring went missing . The man was taken to search in the office . Just after this , the same woman enters the shop with an excuse of repairing a cheap brooch. Morris informs him that Regnier's don't do repairs . He noticed that she was a right handed person . While packing the brooch in the paper packet she swept it off with her hand towards Morris' side . Morris bents to pick it up and everything clicked in his mind he understands everything . She took the packet with her left hand and tried to leave the shop as soon as possible . Morris stopped her and found the ring in her right pocket . They made a plan that the American would past the ring underneath the table with a gum. The lady then would take the ring away but Morris saved and restored it with hid intelligence
