Once upon a time, a young man named Jaidutt lived in Ujjain in India. His father wasted his heritage and rejected his pregnant wife & old mother. By the time Jaidutt turned 18, all the money was gone. They even had sold their last piece of jewellery. His mother said, 'There is a generous merchant named Somadav, he lives in the next town. Why don't you ask to help you to start a business?' Jaidutt said, 'I'll do that right away !' When Jaidutt find him, Somadev was walking with his young pretty daughter, Chandra on the riverside. Jaidutt asked his help to start a business. Somadev said, 'See that dead rat lying by the side road. If you are hard working, you can turn dead rat into gold.' Chandra asked,' How can anyone turn dead rat into gold?' Somadev smiled 'Child, in the right hands, even most useless object can became valuable.' Jaidutt wrapped the rat in some leaves & left for the market. He began to call out, 'A rat for sale'! A man who wants mice to train cat said, 'I won't spend money on a dead rat. I can give you some chickpeas in exchange.' Jaidutt agreed. When he returned home he soaked them. Next morning, he boiled them, added some spices & filled a mud pot with water. He set up a shop in city gates. Some woodcutters carrying wood to sell in the city passed this spot. They gave him some wood in exchange of his chickpeas refreshment. He sell wood in the market for 2 rupees. Now this became his daily routine. After 10 days rain he started a stall to sell firewood. Jaidutt was known as one of the leading merchants of the city.
He went to goldsmith and said that make a rat of gold with ruby eyes and sapphire ears. Then he went to somadev's house with some musicians. Chandra came out by listening music, she was a young lady now. She called out somadev. Somadev looked puzzled, Jaidutt greated him and told that 2 years back somadev told him to turn a dead rat into gold. Somadev congrats him & asked how he did that. Jaidutt narrat the whole story. Somadev said, ' Well done! please keep that rat with you with my blessings.' Jaiduut looked at chandra & said,' May I ask for the hand of your Iovely daughter in marriage?' Somadev asked chandra about that & she smiled in agreement.
