Answer:

Mr. Nuttel visits the country at the urging of his doctor. One day he arrives at the home of the Sappletons. He is received by Mrs. Sappleton's niece, Vera.

Vera tells him that her uncle and his brothers-in-law drowned in a bog three years before and that her aunt leaves the French window open because she believes they will one day return. When the men walk toward the house, Mr. Nuttel thinks they're ghosts and flees the house immediately.

In the closing paragraphs the truth of the mystery is revealed. That day the men had gone hunting, and Vera’s story is purely imaginary. Mr. Nuttel was duped by Vera’s story. Vera invents another story that Mr. Nuttel had once been frightened by a pack of dogs in a cemetery on the banks of the Ganges in India and apparently had bolted at the sight of the spaniel accompanying the hunters. Mr. Nuttel is completely fooled by the young girl’s imagination.
