‘Mother of no. 1084’ is the story of a mother – Sujata, whose son Brati, has been killed in an encounter with the police. Sujata is a strong woman in the story, who believes in and justifies the Naxal ideologies of her dead son who is now lying in the mortuary, as cadaver no. 1084. She meets Brati’s close friends and talks to them about her son.  

Years later, she recollects her son’s death and the political turbulence that rocked West Bengal, during the time of the Naxal movement.

Mahasweta Devi is a Bengali writer and winner of the Ramon Magsaysay Award who wrote the Bengali novel ‘Hajar Churashir 1084’ (Mother of no. 1084).
