Summary of Poem Amanda
Poem Amanda by ROBIN KLEIN depicts a child’s feelings about the restrictions his parents put on him/her. Children feel their parents don’t let them do many things they want to do.
In the poem there is a girl named Amanda who feels her mom nags her too much. The mother scolds Amanda for biting her nails, hunching her shoulders, and not sitting straight. Amanda does not like it.
On the contrary Amanda lives in her dream world. In her fantasy she feels like a mermaid swimming freely and joyously in the light green sea.
The mother drags Amanda out of her dream by asking whether she has completed her homework or not. She also asks her whether she has tidied her room; she tells her to clean and polish her shoes.
Amanda has another reverie in which she herself as an orphan roaming freely, barefoot in golden silence and uninterrupted freedom.
Her reverie is broken by the mother’s nagging complaints. The mother instructs Amanda not to eat chocolates because of her acnes and pimples. She also scolds her for not looking at her when she is talking to her.
Amanda is enjoying another dream; she fantasizes herself as Rapunzel living peacefully in her tower; she feels she will never let down her hair from the tower.
Her mother again reprimands her for sulking and being moody. And the mother feels others will think that she is always pestering her.

Explanation:
The poem deals with the upbringing of a small child, Amanda. It
highlights the struggles faced by the child. Poet Robin Klein makes an
important point that a child should never be denied freedom.
Amanda is a small girl who is termed as moody and careless girl.
She seems to be moody most of the time and tries to escape from her
sorry reality (from her nagging parents). Amanda’s parents are forever
nagging (irritating) her about what to do and what not to do. She is
getting instructions now and then from her parents, which become too
much to handle for a small girl. She is told not to eat her nails and sit in
a proper position. This is frequent interference makes her unhappy. It
seems as if she is not free to do anything that she wants to do. She
wants freedom from all restrictions. Here the only defense against
such reality is her imagination where she often escapes to her
imaginary world.
She dreams to lead a life of a mermaid, so that she could drift
(float/move) alone blissfully in a Languid (relaxed) Emerald sea.
Further, she is asked about cleaning her room and finishing her
homework. To, this, she reacts being an orphan roaming in the street
and making patterns with her bare feet. She feels that an orphan has
more freedom than her. Amanda faces the heat for eating a chocolate,
which had once caused her acne. She takes the form of Rapunzel and
wishes to lead a calm and quiet carefree life in a tower like that of
Rapunzel with nobody to disturb her. Amanda wishes to be a mermaid,
orphan and Rapunzel, so that she could avoid her suffocating reality.
Every child is special in itself. Parents require a great deal of
patience and love to bring them up. Though it is parents who are
responsible for proper upbringing of their child but that should not
make a child feel trapped. Parents think that they are training the
children and preparing them to be acceptable in society. But in the
name of training, their freedom should not be cut short. Parents
should give proper space to children as they learn through experiences
as well. Children are tend to learn certain bad habits, but parents
require great level of understanding and right approach. One cannot
teach their child everything in one day and expect them to behave
properly. It is natural for a childlike Amanda to seek freedom at her
place. Judging every action of child would not do good for the child
rather it will irritate them.
Robin Klein points to the fact that Amanda is forbidden to do
anything without seeking permission. Everything she does it corrected
by her mother all the time, she cannot perform a single thing according
to her wish. She can’t sit lazily around, she can’t eat chocolate too as it
causes ache. Life of Amanda is very suffocating and limited in itself.
She longs for freedom and choice. Her mother doesn’t understand the
fact that Amanda is innocent and naïve (immature), she is too small to
understand the benefits of advice. Only thing that matter to Amanda’s
mother is what society will think of Amanda. We witness the miserable
failure of a mother when Amanda wishes to be an orphan so that she
could be free.
