Summary of the poem Middle age by Kamala Das
Explanation:
The poem's narrator is a mother. She considers her adolescent son, who has emerged from the cocoon of her love and care. He wants to flutter out into the open like a butterfly. He no longer wants her except to serve tea and iron clothing. He's also started to have a stern and unpleasant demeanour. She recalls the amusing games they played when he was little. The son no longer has time for her. However, his mother still requires his assistance. She silently weeps when she is left alone with his books. She wishes for the good old days to return. But her dreams are dashed when she meets the son. "You have lived in a dreamworld," he says as he turns around in disdain.Mother, it's time to wake up."
The poem captures all of middle age's loneliness, sadness, and agony. It also illuminates the absence of love in human relationships. She cannot be one mother in this selfish world, but rather a representation of all moms.
