In the poem 'People' the poet, D.H. Lawrence says that he likes people. But he would prefer them to be at a distance. He likes to see people occupied with their own pursuits. He does not want them to come near and interfere in his life. In this way he feels that he will have the satisfaction that there is enough space for everyone in the world.

He seems to be a little grumpy about humanity. May be he does not feel that there is only a lack of physical space but there is not enough quiet space to examine ones thoughts and inner self as well.

When D.H. Lawrence starts of the poem that “he like people at a distance”, we think that he is not a friendly person but no. He is a friendly person but an introvert. From the line “if they will only leave me alone” we get to know that he is not left alone because of him being famous.

We also understand that because of people speaking continuously, he feels that there is no room for everyone and if they only leave him alone then he can atleast imagine that there still more space in the world. By this we understand that his mind is not silent and that he is yearning for that silence. This yearning is reflecting outside as people speaking continuously
