'Rain on the roof' is written by Coates Kinney.
The first stanza talks about a rainy night which is being described by the poet. There is darkness all around the sky with invisible stars. Due to this, the poet becomes sad and gloomy and he even personifies his tears with rain which is mirroring his emotions. He is curled up in a bed which is the only thing that is giving him happiness.
In the second stanza, he talks about the sound the raindrops make, when they fall on the roof. He compares that sound with the beatings of his heart. Slowly, all his memories are returning back to him, which is entwined with one another.
The Third stanza is all about the poet's childhood memories. He remembers how his mother took care of him and his siblings while she put them to sleep. She used to give more preference in taking care of him while he slept peacefully with pleasant dreams.
In fourth stanza, he talks about his siblings who he imagines as angles. Though they used to fight when they were young, he remembers those fight in a good way
The fifth stanza is all about the poet's unrequited love. The poet considers this as a disturbing memory when he was in love with a blue-eyed girl, who did not love him back. He is remembering everything with a thumping heart which he compares with the raindrops falling on the roof.
In the last stanza, there is a comparison between the music of rain and man-made music. He says no human can match the accuracy of nature. The sound of nature can overcome anything and has a healing power, which can comfort depressed ones.
