The Lotus is a poem that represents a conflict between two flowers – a rose and a lily. Each flower tries to justify why it should be chosen as the Queen of flowers. The poet assigns the Flower Goddess Flora the task of creating a flower that is as delicious as the rose and also as stately as the lily at the same time.

Finally, Flora creates a beautiful flower called the lotus and gives it the Queen status. The lotus is both red and white like the rose and lily respectively. It is chosen as the queen because it is one of India’s national symbols and also represents the Hindu faith.
