The poem is addressed to a woodman who is on a tree cutting spree. The poet addresses the woodman and asks him to spare an oak tree that has been planted by his forefather. This tree was also the house of many wild birds.

The woodcutter is about to cut down this tree to which the poet has many fond memories attached. The woodman was trying to chop the tree that had served many generations in the poet’s family. The woodman was all set to fell his axe on the shady tree under which the poet had played with his siblings many times.
