In the story ' The portrait of a Lady' khushwant Singh presents a portrait of his grandmother. She is seen very religious and down-to-earth lady who believes in values. The author traces his relationship with her grandmother in the story. He thought that his grandmother once been young and pretty and had even had a husband, but that was hard to believe because she had been old and wrinkled for the twenty years that he had known her. The author and his grandmother were good friends. the author and grandmother used to live with each other but after some time his parents who were living in a city they told them to live with them. That was a turning point in thier friendship. As the years rolled they used to talk less with each other. When author decided to go abroad for further studies , he was sure that his grandmother would be upset. After five years when he came back home and met her she did not look a day older. His grandmother used to pray whole day but one day in the evening she did not pray. The next morning she was taken ill. His grandmother told him that her end was near. Now she had omitted to pray, she did not going to waste any more time talking to him. She lay peacefully in bed and telling her beads and her lips stopped moving. After few hours of mourning they left her alone to make arrangements for her funeral.
