Summary

The Blue Umbrella' is a beautiful story about a girl Binya and her adventures with a bright blue silk umbrella, which she exchanged for her lucky leopard claw pendant from a city woman who came to the village for a picnic. Like most of the author's stories that are based in small villages of India, this story too takes place in a village called Garhwal located in the foothills of the Himalayas.

The story starts in a simple manner with Binya procuring the umbrella from the city lady and showing it off to the entire village, but as we continue reading, the story takes a few twists and turns when the villagers get jealous of her umbrella and long to have a similar one. "The umbrella was like a flower, a great blue flower that had sprung up on the dry brown hillside."Like always, the representation of the umbrella is so precise that you could actually imagine it in front of you. Well, that's the beauty of Ruskin Bond's writing. He makes the most ordinary things appear extraordinary. His intricate narration carries us to a different world; a world where we all can find a little of ourselves.Moving further, the story becomes a little complex, as human emotions start playing their part.

In just a few pages, the author elucidates emotions like longing, happiness, pride, jealousy, greed, remorse and sacrifice. And like always, Ruskin Bond ends his story with a powerful message. The lines, " Had she loved the umbrella too much? Had it mattered more to her than people mattered?" leave us with some food for our thoughts.

Ruskin Bond concludes, " But an umbrella isn't everything." Binya sacrifices her umbrella for the happiness of Ram Bharosa. And this, in turn, makes him a more pleasant and friendly person. A simple act of kindness can indeed transform lives.
