THE TOP ATTIC IN PRINGLE'S MANSION, EDINBURGH

The top attic in Pringle’s Mansion, Edinburgh is a spine chilling ghost story by Elliott O'Donnell. It is a short story that relates the experiences of a young girl Letty, who served there as a maid.

The story opens with a Miss South reminiscing over a picture of the  two-storeyed, extremely ancient Pringle Mansion. She appears to be obsessed by it. There is a vivid description of the  Gothic mansion with its huge building and innumerable rooms. Once the whole house is totally described the story begins through the mouth of Letty who is currently working as a nurse to Miss South.

Letty narrates her experiences of confronting the various ghosts in the house. The first time she sighted one was when she was downstairs in the cellar all alone . It was a limpid figure watching her with cold eyes. As she fainted the Admiral, the owner of the mansion, carried her upstairs and ordered all the servants never to let her go downstairs alone.

Letty was an early riser. Once in the wee hours of the morning she sighted another ugly looking phantom breathing down her neck.

Her worst experience was when she landed at the haunted room that was just next to her room in the attic. Being prone to sleep walking, Letty had landed herself right into the room only to be awakened by the horrible sight of murder.

As she stared at the moon lit room she found a  horrible looking figure of a child taking shape on the bed. Once the child began to breathe another phantom even more ugly stole in and smothered it.

Next Letty heard the sound of digging. Since then she was too scared to move at night. The Admiral was forced to leave the house with all its staff and ultimately the house had to be brought down much to the sorrow of Miss South.
