He noticed the hermit digging the ground and did it for him out of sympathy. He continued to ask him the questions, but the hermit remained silent until hours had gone and the sun had fallen.
A bearded man with his hands on his stomach ran by the hermit. He was injured and dying, and the hermit informed the king, who assisted the bearded man.
When the king awoke the next day, the bearded guy recognized him and apologized. He admitted that he was the king's enemy. The bearded guy claimed that he learned of the king's visit to the hermit and attempted to kill him on his way home, but failed.
