In this poem,Walt Whitman has wonderfully brought out the contrast between animals and human beings. Animals are generally simple in nature whereas humans are greedy, selfish and very confused. The poet is very happy with the simple nature of animals and he prefers to follow them. The poet is desirous to live among them as he thinks they are self-contented and calm. They are wise and that is why they neither moan nor crave for more and more. They don't weep for their sins and they have no reason to even worship God. They are always satisfied and have no need to possess things. They respect none including their ancestors. They remain indifferent during the times of pleasure and pain.

For these reasons, the poet wishes to learn from animals. They do not possess any false attitude. They are free from all kinds of trivial concerns and hence go on to live their natural life.
