Summary
This Cherokee folktale tells us the story of how the Milky
Way was formed. An old man and woman would pound
meals to make their living. One year they found that a
giant dog was eating the meals at night. So, the villagers
decided that they would gather at the old man's house.
They would bring their noisemakers to scare the dog
away. When they caught the dog eating the meal in great
gulps, they rattled their noisemakers. Frightened, the dog
gave a great leap towards the sky. The meal poured
from his mouth. The trail of the white meal made the
Milky Way.​
