Fig. 1 presents the calculated electron density distributions in the ionosphere of the northern hemisphere at 300 km altitude for quiet (Kp = 1) and disturbed (Kp = 5) conditions on the days of the winter and summer solstices for 0400 and 1600 UT, corresponding to the conditions of the smallest and largest illumination of the high-latitude ionosphere.
