Answer:

In this poem, poet is in some forest. He feels someone calling his name. He asks ‘who called ?’ and this word gets echoed ‘who called ?’ ‘who called ?’. The birds get confused and poet himself is astonished.

In the second stanza poet tells that the higher boughs full of leaves were hissing at the sun and the dark air i.e. the air present beneath the branches of the tree was carrying the cry ‘who called ?’ to all the places around continuously.

In third stanza poet tells that there is someone there who is hiding in the shade of trees and telling whatever poet is telling to mock the poet.

In the final stanza poet bawls out ‘who cares ?’. He thinks there is no one who cares about him and starts weeping. The speed of wind becomes slow and in such silence ‘who cares ?’ ‘who cares ?’ is again being echoed. It is echoed in wailing voice of poet to and fro.
