Yes, sun is ultimate source of energy for all living things,

makhil33: Fossil fuels were made from living organisms. Some living organisms got their energy directly from the sun and made their own food by the process of photosynthesis e.g. plants. Other organisms got their energy from eating plants that had stored the sun's energy.Solar energy is pretty obvious. The energy from the sun is received on earth and either used as active or passive solar energy.therefore sun is worshiped and considered as the ultimate source of energy FOR EARTH

Sun is the ultimate source of energy because sun rays are needed by the plants to prepare food.Only if the plants prepare food, herbivores can survive and only if they survive, other carnivores and omnivore can survive.

So,to thank the sun we celebrate harvest festivals like Pongal. It is the Indian cultural way of thanking sun.
