Superstitions are beliefs in supernatural creatures and events. People are said to be superstitious when they believe in supernatural creatures like ghosts, witches and demons. They also believe in good and bad omens, in objects which possess magical powers and events that arouse fear in the soul of man. Superstitions are not founded onSuperstitions are found all over the world. They are as old as mankind. It is very difficult to trace their origin. Some superstitions are the outcome of good or bad results of an event. Some have their source in religion. But, whatever may be the origin of superstitions, ignorance and reverence for traditions are mainly responsible for keeping them alive. (C) Indians are superstitious like other people elsewhere. Superstitions govern their life from birth to death. It is quite amusing to make a list of the superstitions. The sight of a monkey, a cat or a Brahmin early in the morning is considered unlucky. If somebody sneers as you prepare to leave the house, it is an ill-omen indicating your bad luck. A man coming from other side with a load of wood on his head, suggests ill-luck for you. The sight of a sweeper or a corpse is a sure indication of success. If you meet someone with an empty bucket or an empty vessel in his hand, it is considered an ill-omen. Jingling of keys or the sound of metallic object is an indication of a quarrel that will soon follow. If you find your shoe turned upside down, it means that you will have soon to undertake a journey. If you have an itch in the palm of your hand, it means you will make money. It is also advisable to take something sweet before leaving the house. The throbbing of a man's right eye is a good sign while that of left eyes is a bad sign. If a man is called back when he is going on, it is bad omen. The looking of an owl during day time or the howling of a dog near a house indicates that death will overtake the house. A crow crowing at the top of a house is supposed to be a signal of coming guest. (D) Superstitions differ in their significance in different parts of India. The sight of a cobbler or a barber is regarded as auspicious in Uttar Pradesh but not in the Punjab. But the sight of a sweeper is good in the Punjab but bad in Uttar Pradesh. Similarly the sight of a Brahmin does not bring ill-luck in the South as it does in the North. E) Superstitions have been responsible for the harm caused to people in the past as well as in the present time. They are a great hindrance in the development and growth of our spirit. They destroy self-confidence. They burden and weaken the mind. Superstitions have done more harm than good. (f) Ignorance is the chief reason of superstitions. When people can’t understand certain events or the logic behind them, they think there is some supernatural power behind them . only scientific education can developour ability to analyse things and understand the logic behind them. (G) No doubt , superstitions have gone deep into our blood. we should have a rational and scientific attitude towards life to get rid of superstition
