Suppose a tunnel is dug along a diameter of the earth. A particle is dropped from a point, a distance h directly above the tunnel. The motion of the particle as seen from the earth is

(b) parabolic
(c) on a straight line
(d) periodic.

Answer ⇒ Option (c). and Option (d). are correct.

Explanation ⇒ The Motion as observed by the earth will be straight line since the path is along the diameter of the Earth. Therefore, Option (c) is correct.

But, the Force acting towards the center of the Earth will be Gravitational Force, in Which force is proportional to inverse square of distance. Thus, it can not be Simple Harmonic Motion. Option (a). is incorrect.

Motion cannot be Parabolic since it is straight line.option (b) is incorrect.

Since, Particle used to go and then returns to the same positive and all this occurs in a fixed time which is numerically equal to 84.6 minutes.

Thus, It is Periodic Motion. Hence, Option (d). is correct.

Hope it helps.
