Landless farm labourers have termed the relief of Rs 520 crore announced for them by Punjab finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal in his budget speech as “meagre” and want the institutional and non-institutional debt to be waived off in entirety through some viable mechanism. Though there is no concrete data about the debt of landless labourers, some labourer unions claim nearly 6.5 lakh such families carry a burden of over Rs 5,900 crore.The state government has calculated the debt through primary cooperative agriculture service societies (PACS). As per government sources, waiver of the outstanding principal amount up to Rs 25,000 will be waived off. Apart from Rs 520 crore for farm labourers, the state government has allocated nearly Rs 1,500 crore for farmers, who till now have not got the benefit of the debt waiver scheme
