Points in support of MTP:

• Medical termination of pregnancy is approved by law upto a period of 12 weeks or 1st Trimester of pregnancy. Even in serious pregnancy cases, abortion can be performed at 20 weeks. This helps to prevent any serious complications to the mother due to pregnancy.

• Medical termination of pregnancy helps to control the population and maintained it at demographic transition.

• Medical termination of pregnancy prevents the birth of genetically abnormal child and prevents any future suffering to the child.

Points against MTP:

• Medical termination of pregnancy should not be used as a method of contraception as it involves taking away the life of an embryo/foetus, which is inhuman.

• Medical termination of pregnancy procedures may cause pain cramps and excessive bleeding from the mother.
