Both the boys' behavior seemed very innocent and childlike. Their smile was steady and engaged people in their stare. They were also jovial and full of energy whenever the author met them. They were not disguised to act as someone else. This was the reason why the author calls them both 'childish' and 'artless'. Nicola and Jacopo were truly called as the two gentlemen as they both were truly disciplined and noble to the core of their characters. After their father died in the war and they became homeless, they were very mature to have taken up every possible odd jobs to earn money. They were performing duties and taking up responsibilities of themselves and their sister just like any parent would. They were very hard working and honest and also, never lost any chance to earn money. They also visited their ill sister occasionally who was being treated for tuberculosis of spine.
