First of all, preparation is key, its best to prepare first so that you will not have to face such situations.
But anyways,
If you dont know the answer,
Confidence is key, always act confident and dont show that you dont know the answer.
As a debater, I have come across many situations of improptu rounds where i dont know what the topic means
In such cases, act like you know, always be confident and dont let them see your fear and nervousness
Most times, the one who asked the question does not know the answer, so tell them whatever you think the answer is, it is the way you speak it that matters. You need to be convincing of an answer even if its wrong, convince and make them believe that it is correct. There is a very small chance that they will go and google it.
How ever, if the person asking is a professional in the field, try to recall and answer based on the little knowledge you have on the topic and try to deviate it a little. Ir try using examples or stories to explain, this will draw their attention towards something else and give you enough time to come up with an answer(that is if they havent forgotten about the question)
