Question:

Surekha travels 10 km to reach her office. She walks 0.5 km on foot at a speed of 8 km/h to catch her charted bus which travels of a speed of 40 km/h. Time taken by her to reach the office is:

Solution:

Time taken to travel on foot:

Distance = 0.5 km

Speed = 8 km/h

Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Time = 0.5 ÷ 8 = 1/16 hour = 3.75 mins

Time taken on the bus:

Distance = 10 - 0.5 = 9.5 km

Speed = 40 km/h

Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Time = 9.5 ÷ 40 = 19/80 hour = 14.25 mins

Find total time needed:

Total time needed = 3.75 + 14.25 = 18 mins

Answer: It takes Surekha 18 mins to reach the office.
