I live in Patna, and there are various slum dwellings in and around the city. Some of them are in the areas of Loharwa Ghat, in Gardanibagh area, etc. For this survey I surveyed the area of Gardanibagh area slum dwellings and there were major differences between the drainage system of these slum area and in the historical areas of the Indus Valley Civilization.
EXPLANATION:
The Indus Valley Civilization also called as Harrappa Civilization was among one of the earliest civilizations of the world known for its excellent town planning and drainage patterns.
In Indus Valley Civilization the drains from each houses was connected to the connecting drains which in turn was connected with the main drain on the streets.
All the drains were covered by bricks or stone slabs. There was also points where blockage of the drains could be checked, so they showed advanced form of drainage patterns and extreme care was taken to ensure the sanitation and hygiene of the place.
The roads of the Indus Valley Civilization was build with bricks and was properly planned in the grid pattern. But in the slums, due to unplanned construction of houses and drains, almost all the drains were blocked.
Most of them were blocked due to the polyethylene bags, it was uncovered which served as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and house flies. So, the sanitation system was badly damaged in the slum area. The roads were full of pot holes and were filled with illegal encroachments which gave very unpleasant appearance to the whole area.
