A nice question and surely this simple line tells you a great story about mankind.
Humans are capable of doing almost impossible things if they really put their heart into it. E.g. someone who grew up in a rich family, would be very complacent with whatever they do and might not be able to work hard like a more poor person.
But the poor person's motivation is sole survival and to make enough money to eat his next food. This necessary for survival pushes man to it's limits and makes them not only work hard but work their hardest!
Examples are seen in extreme sports, mountain climbers, scuba divers
