Surya was unable to open his eyes because -

• As mentioned in the question,the time was 12 o'clock of the night. Which means,the environment was pitch dark.

• And,in the dark conditions,the pupil of the eye gets bigger to extract all the available light in the environment to get the best possible visuals.

• But,when the light turned on,the pupil wanted to shrink in it's normal size because in the bright light conditions,the maximum light extraction through broadly opened pupils is not necessary.

• Now,this size change of the pupil is not an instant process,it happens in a slow speed. To give the pupils necessary time,the eyes get automatically closed. This protects the pupil from environmental light rays while changing the size.

This helps in a stabilized size change of the pupil.
