Sweets are liked by children.
News is being read by him

Here in both the sentences Sweets and News are uncountable nouns.
Why in the first sentence sweets is counted as plural but in the second sentence news is counted as singular?

Explanation:

NEWS is a sheet of paper in which we can know what's going on in the world

NEWS PAPER=SINGULAR

NEWS PAPERS=PLURAL

here paper counts as singular or plural

Sweets are food items

there r many varieties in sweets

so here I am mentioning sweets which is a plural word

which means number of sweets so it's considered as a plural word
