Answer:

Explanation:

Antonio was a well to do merchant living in Venice. He had borrowed money from Shylock to provide money to his friend Bassanio to woo the lady Portia from Belmont. Antonio was indebted to Shylock. Since, his ships had perished, Antonio was unable to pay the due amount of 3000 ducats.

When Portia in the disguise of Balthazar said Shylock that he would have to show mercy, Shylock was disappointed that he told asked her if the Christians would let their children get married to the servants or treat the servants in the same way as they themselves were treated and provide them with soft beds to sleep on!

Bassanio told Shylock that he would pay 3 times the due amount which he refused to accept. Shylock just wanted a pound of Antonio's flesh as his penalty (he had a high hatred towards Antonio because he lent money free of charge and moreover despised Shylock at the places where most merchants gather), thus Shylock was stubborn to kill Antonio.

Portia in the disguise of a young learned lawyer, finally told it in the court that a foreigner who directly or indirectly threatens the life of a Venetian will be charged appropriately with all their property that have to be given and handed over to the Duke and the Dukedom of Venice!
