The incomplete labels in the given Nitrogen cycle are :
Label X (Box 1) : Free nitrogen is in the atmosphere
Label Y (Box 3) : Producers absorb nitrogen compounds through their roots
Nitrogen Cycle :
The nitrogen Cycle is a biological and chemical process that involves nitrogen being converted into different forms from the soil, air, etc. via a sequence of different processes involving nitrogen fixation, consumption, denitrification, etc.
The major steps of a basic general nitrogen cycle are :
- Initially, the nitrogen is present in the form of N2 i.e. atmospheric nitrogen
- Nitrogen Fixing bacteria like Rhizobium etc. convert this atmospheric nitrogen into a form of ammonia i.e. a form of nitrogen that can be used by plants or other producers. Through this process of nitrogen fixation, the nitrogen travels from the atmosphere to the soil
- The plants or producers then consume this inorganic form of nitrogen from the soil through their roots.
- This inorganic form of nitrogen is further transmitted and chained as other consumers eat these organisms.
- Also as these organisms consuming inorganic nitrogen die, the decomposing bacterias break them down back to the soil and completed the cycle.
