Shylock is the most debatable character in Merchant of Venice. Sympathising for him is not offensive. But at many times he appears to not deserve the sympathy. You can say he is he joker of this story.

He symbolises greed , orthodox behavior of Jews , hunger for revenge, hunger for money and hatred. At the same time he also represents the humility and miserable life of being a Jew , a father with an unfaithful daughter, a widowed husband , a person with no friends and someone who has no one to share his feelings with. This is the reason his character becomes debatable and he can neither be categorised as an evil human nor as a human to be sympathised for.

So back to the question , Yes you can be sympathetic or him .

Hope this helps.

Answer:

Shylock lends money by charging interest Antonio lends money without interest but when the time came of signing of bond that time Antonio speaks wrong things to Shylock . A man who have self respect always takes revenge when something wrong is spoken about him .Shylock does the same .If Antonio would not have spoken such wrong things about Antonio then may Shylock have some heart towards Antonio .so , Shylock is a human who also have the right to take revenge .the only mistake Shylock does that he declared a bond based on life.
